NGA's Military Deputy Army Maj. Gen. Mark Quantock spoke at Fort Belvoir's Cold War Memorial during the installation's Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 7.
"There are more than 3,000 veterans who work with me on Fort Belvoir North -- doing everything they can for national security -- to avoid war and keep Americans and our allies safe," said Quantock. "And there are many countless other vets who continue to serve our country in a variety of ways."
This year's ceremony was dedicated to local Gold Star families of those lost in the Vietnam War. The ceremony commemorated the 50th anniversary of the start of the 11-year conflict.
Quantock's speech highlighted his own father's two tours during Vietnam and the sacrifices made in support of the war effort.
"Looking back, I wish that our Vietnam veterans had been welcomed home, honored and respected as much as our recent veterans have been," said Quantock. "All I can do for those veterans though, is to offer my own sincere thank you and say on behalf of a grateful nation: Welcome home."
