Vice Admiral Robert B. Murrett

Between July 2006 and July 2010, Vice Admiral Robert B. Murrett was the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. As the young agency’s third director, Murrett oversaw “an impressive array of achievements at NGA,” according to former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

“The impact that this organization has on our nation and our men and women in uniform is real and profound,” said Gates. Under Murrett’s leadership, NGA pushed to get more analysts and support staff into theater during the dual wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In his final year as director, NGA also helped to provide a common operating picture in Haiti following the devastating earthquake and tracked the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf. He also oversaw the construction of NGA Campus East, the agency’s state-of-the-art headquarters in Springfield, Virginia.

Currently, Murrett is professor of practice in the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He also serves as the university’s deputy director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism.
