On May 2, 2011, President Barack Obama announced to the American people and the world that the United States had conducted an operation that located the notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden, the al Qa'ida leader considered responsible for the terrorist acts of Sept. 11, 2001.
NGA was integral in helping the Department of Defense and U.S. Intelligence Community pinpoint the Abbottabad compound in Pakistan, where bin Laden was residing. Following identification, NGA worked in collaboration with other intelligence agencies to create a replica of Osama bin Laden’s home in Pakistan. The model of the buildings, walls and infrastructure was made from acrylic plastic and rests on a foam foundation. Plaster and other artistic materials were used to replicate the surrounding environmental features.
